Low buy challenge – week 1

So, I actually began my low buy challenge this past week. My rules are for March – May… I’m just getting ahead of the game I guess. šŸ™‚ This week, the palette of the week was the Urban Decay Born to Run palette.

I had such high hopes for this palette as everyone I have watched on YouTube who has reviewed it, loved it! Well, on day 1, look 1 – I liked it – but I wasn’t smitten. Day 2, look 2, I didn’t like it at all. Day 3, look 3, my mind was made up. *Unpopular opinion* 😳 The palette is ok, but I was disappointed in the hype.

Day 1, look 1 – I used – (see the look here)

  1. weekender
  2. still shot
  3. hell ride
  4. drift
  5. guilt trip

Overall, look 1 was just, meh, for me. I liked it, but I wasn’t overjoyed with it. I guess I was feeling a bit disappointed. I feel like the pictures didn’t do the colors justice because, to me, it was prettier in person. I think I was most disappointed in still shot – I really wanted this color to be coral and vibrant. On my skin tone it had barely any pigment, I had to build it up several times and it pulled more orange than coral.

Day 2, look 2 – I used – (see the look here):

  1. weekender
  2. riff
  3. hell ride
  4. good as gone
  5. accelerate
  6. blaze
  7. guilt trip on the lower lash line

I was so disappointed in this look. I wanted the shade accelerate to really pop and be as beautiful on the lid as it is in the pan. I used Mac painterly paint pot under the shadow and it still just didn’t pop the way I hoped. I don’t like wetting my brush to make shimmers pop. I feel it just isn’t a technique that works well on my eyes. I have “aging” eyes, and a lot of times I find wetting the shimmer exaggerates the texture on my eyes. 😦 However, even though I didn’t like the look in person, I feel it looked better in pictures.

Day 3, look 3 – I used – (see the look here):

  1. still shot
  2. hell ride
  3. guilt trip
  4. jet
  5. wanderlust
  6. smog
  7. big sky
  8. breakaway

Overall, I liked this look as a smokey eye. I feel like the greens performed well – a bit deeper than I was hoping for, but they went on the lid nicely. I tried to build up jet on the outer corner to really differentiate it from wanderlust, but it just didn’t build to be as dark as I wanted it. So I added a bit of smog over top of wanderlust to try and lighten up the green a bit.

Final thoughts… I have used this palette before and the shimmers are hit and miss for me as well as some of the mattes. they just seem to lack pigment in my opinion. So my overall feeling on the palette is – Meh – its good but it’s not what I was hoping for with all the hype. If I didn’t have these colors in other palettes, I think I possibly would have appreciated this palette a little more. But I just feel there are other palettes in my collection that did it better.

So…… is it staying in my collection or am I decluttering/returning it?

This one has been returned. 😦 😳
